Healthcare Innovation Blog: Making a Difference in Healthcare

Updated: Feb 20

My journey has been profoundly shaped by my father’s battle with cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma. When we thought we were out of options, Stanford saved his life through an experimental immunotherapy trial. This pivotal chapter reshaped my perspective and career towards the complex and impactful world of healthcare. During the past 5 years at Stanford, I had the opportunity to manage a dynamic Strategic Sourcing team and partner with world-class physicians to prioritize both cost and quality in a clinically integrated Supply Chain.

With the goal of making patient care more affordable and accessible, I came to GSB to increase my impact in healthcare. The MSx program has been more than an academic pursuit; it's been a melting pot of ideas, perspectives, and aspirations. Interacting with a diverse cohort of like-minded yet uniquely accomplished individuals has been a transformative experience. It's not just about learning from the curriculum but also about embracing the rich tapestry of student life here, from academic rigor to the joy of connecting at a deeper level during small group dinners or while sharing visions for innovative projects.

Through research while at the GSB, I’ve come to understand the broader landscape of healthcare challenges, underscoring a stark reality:

There is a rising issue in US healthcare. Among high-income countries, the US spends the most on health care but has the worst health outcomes [1], measured by various indicators such as life expectancy, chronic disease burden, and preventable hospital admissions. National health expenditure is projected to reach $6.2 trillion by 2028 [2]. Such a rise in expenditure is not only a burden on the national economy, but also reflects on individual expenses as indicated by insurance deductibles rising YoY [3]. This trend signifies that despite higher spending, the financial barrier to accessing healthcare is becoming more formidable for the average American.

It’s more important than ever to explore innovative solutions and learn from those leading the charge. In the upcoming CSI series, we aim to dive deeper into these critical issues.

Stay tuned as we engage with a variety of Healthcare trailblazers and thought leaders to learn more about how they are addressing healthcare's affordability and accessibility.
